If you are among many Canadians battling some form of dental anxiety, help is on the way. With sedation dentistry in Fort McMurray, Alberta, dental fear doesn’t have to prevent you from getting the healthy, beautiful smile you deserve. Whether your dental anxiety originates from a previous negative experience or the sound and smell at a dental office, Stoneycreek Village Dental is here to make a difference in how you experience dentistry.

Our sedation dentistry options

Our light touch techniques, coupled with anesthesia, are enough for a comfortable dental experience for most patients. However, patients with dental anxiety or fear need a little more care. Depending on your level of dental anxiety, we offer the options below:

  • Oral sedation: This treatment is ideal for mild to moderate dental anxiety. Oral sedation is a prescription pill you take about an hour before your dental appointment. Your dentist can vary the dosage depending on your anxiety level. This sedation gives you deep relaxation, but you remain awake and alert to respond to instructions.
  • IV sedation: This sedation works for patients with severe dental fear and those with multiple dental surgery treatments. IV sedation is administered by injecting sedation medication into your veins. This sedation kicks in immediately and gives patients little to no memory of the treatment. While IV sedation makes you deeply asleep, you can easily be woken with a gentle shake. We monitor your vital organs throughout your treatment to ensure everything goes according to plan.

Patients with a low pain threshold, strong gag reflex, or difficulty overcoming dental anxiety no longer have to miss dental appointments. Sedation dentistry can help you conquer your dental phobia to get the dental care you deserve.

Give dental fear the boot with sedation dentistry

What are my sedation options?

Generally, the sedation options provided in dentistry include IV sedation, oral sedation, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and general anesthesia. We provide our patients with IV or oral sedation options that can be controlled to safely provide the right amount of sedation for each of our patients.

How does IV sedation work?

IV sedation is a form of dental sedation that provides sedative medication through a vein, which can be monitored and controlled by the doctor to increase or decrease the level of sedation. It quickly helps patients reach a deep state of relaxation and drowsiness while remaining conscious through the procedure with little to no memory of the procedure afterwards.

How does oral sedation work?

Oral sedation is provided in the form of a pill or liquid prescribed medication which you will usually take an hour before coming in for your procedure. It can reduce anxiety and keep you calm and very relaxed throughout your appointment while allowing you to remain conscious and responsive.

What are the benefits of IV or oral sedation?

Oral sedation starts working before you arrive for your appointment so you can walk into the office feeling more relaxed, making this a great option for patients with high levels of dental anxiety. We can also adjust the prescription to control the level of sedation. IV sedation is ideal for long procedures because we can quickly and easily adjust the level of sedation during the procedure. Both options can safely provide improved comfort and a better dental experience.

Who can benefit from sedation?

Sedation can be a great option for patients with anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or a low pain tolerance. It may also benefit those who are facing a long procedure or multiple procedures or those who struggle to sit still for long periods of time. We encourage anyone who tends to avoid dental treatment for any reason to talk to us about our sedation options.
